Dentures: Know Your Options
Generally speaking, dentures are prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base. They are worn over the gums. We offer three types of dentures at Desert Family Dental: (1) complete dentures, (2) partial dentures, and (3) overdentures.
Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, replace all of the teeth in your dental arches. This can be your upper arch, lower arch, or both. If you are missing all of your teeth, a full denture can restore your ability to chew, speak, and smile. Our dentures are made with a precision fit, to give you the confidence of a beautiful and natural look. Some require adhesives to stay in place, and may need to be refitted or relined over time to ensure a good fit.
Partial dentures are similar to complete dentures, but are used when some healthy teeth still remain in place. Both types are removable and non-invasive. The advantages of both types is that they tend to be more affordable than replacing missing teeth with dental implants. For patients wanting more a more sturdy, permanent, or natural-feeling replacement, overdentures or dental bridges may be a better option.
Overdentures (dentures supported by dental implants) are best for or people wanting more stability than a traditional full or partial denture can offer. This can be done in two ways, with either a snap-in overdenture or a non-removable hybrid denture. With both types, our patients have loved being able to smile freely and dine out with more confidence. Read more about implant-based dentures here.
A snap-in overdenture can be a great option. The design of the denture is the same as a normal partial or full denture—but instead of floating free in the mouth, titanium-based implants fuse with the jawbone to provide an anchor to keep the dentures in place, resulting in a more stable and natural feeling. You’ll be able to speak, eat, and smile without worrying about the denture moving around or falling out. Implants are fitted with a snapping system that allows you to remove the dentures for cleaning.
We also offer a hybrid denture, which is a type of overdenture that is permanently attached to dental implants and can only be removed by a dentist. For many patients, this option looks and feels more like natural teeth. This type of denture works particularly well for patients with cognitive disabilities.
