What You Need To Know About Pregnancy And Oral Health

 In Dental Care

Pregnancy can be an exciting time in your life. However, it also makes you more susceptible to dental problems which can affect your unborn child’s health. Here are some of the things you need to know about pregnancy and oral health in order to protect yourself and your baby.

  • See your dentist at some point during your pregnancy. Let them know about any changes you’ve experienced in your mouth. Your dentist may give you advice on protecting your oral health while you are pregnant.
  • Morning sickness puts stomach acids into your mouth that eat away at tooth enamel and cause decay. If you suffer from frequent vomiting because of morning sickness, then combine baking soda and water to swish around in your mouth to stop the acids from attacking teeth.
  • Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and to floss daily. Because of the changes in your body, you are more likely to develop pregnancy gingivitis, which can increase the risk of giving birth early to an infant with a low birth weight.
  • It is safe to have dental x-rays while you are pregnant, and they are often necessary if you experience a dental emergency. A lead apron covering your body will reduce exposure.
  • Your child’s teeth begin developing between the third and sixth months of pregnancy. Nutrients such as protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, C, and D are imperative for your infant’s tooth development. Be sure these nutrients are a part of your daily diet.
  • Pregnancy increases the levels of progesterone and estrogen in your body, which can affect the ligaments and bone supporting teeth. Your teeth may feel a little loose while you are pregnant. Consult your dentist if you feel this is an issue.
